SPMC Neurosurgical Training Program Secures PBNS Accreditation Renewal
SPMC Neurosurgery Wins 1st Place for Best Research Presentation at AACNS 2026
SPMC Neurosurgery proudly congratulates its resident staff for their successful participation in the recently concluded 18th Asian Australasian Congress of Neurological Surgeons (AACNS 2026), held from June 15–18, 2026, at the SMX Convention Centre, Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines.
AACNS 2026 brought together neurosurgeons, researchers, and trainees from across the Asian Australasian region, serving as one of the largest neurosurgical congresses in this part of the world. The congress provided a platform for scientific exchange, academic collaboration, and the presentation of research addressing important challenges in neurosurgical practice.
The department is especially proud of Dr. Joselv Albano (PGY-5), who won 1st Place for Best Oral Research Presentation for his paper on the evolution of mission-based surgeries to locally sustained neurosurgical innovations in the Southern Philippines. His recognition highlights the growing academic contribution of SPMC Neurosurgery and its commitment to developing locally led solutions for patients in Mindanao and beyond.
The SPMC Neurosurgery residents also presented their research work during the congress:
Dr. Sarah Patricia Buhian (PGY-3)
“Navigating the Skull Base: Surgical Insights in the Management of Penetrating Traumatic Brain Injury”
Dr. Kameela Monique Malbog (PGY-2)
“Choroid Plexus Cauterization for the Treatment of Hydranencephaly: A Case Series”
Dr. Fatima Carcueva (PGY-2)
“A Multimodal Neurosurgical Approach to Intracranial Tuberculoma and Abscess: The Adjunctive Role of Intraoperative Ultrasound, Fluorescence-Guided Resection, and Ventriculocisternal Shunting”
The consultant staff also attended the different days of the congress. Present were: Dr. Jose Nicanor del Rosario III (Chairman and Program Director), Dr. Russel Sasing (Training Officer), and Dr. Silvestre Gonzales (Chairman Emeritus).
Through research, collaboration, and continued academic engagement, SPMC Neurosurgery remains committed to advancing neurosurgical training, innovation, and service in Mindanao and beyond.
This achievement marks a proud moment for SPMC Neurosurgery and reflects the department’s continuing pursuit of excellence in clinical care, research, and education.
